What connection do I need to get home theatre sound from my HD/flatscreen tv...get it with dvds/cds, not tv?

Audio cables from the TV to the receiver. Depending the outputs from your TV. You can use the white & red RCA cables or an optical audio cable if you have an output from you TV for it.
